07:11 pm - For all your parody fic needs.... It's been several months since I've updated this journal. I don't really have time to find parodies to recommend.
But... I've created a community to replace this journal. So head over to badfic_parodies.
I will repost all the previous entries from here over there. And anyone who wants to can join the community and post their own recs of parodies of HP and/or LotR Mary Sues (and other badfic). (You can even plug your own stuff if you want.)

04:01 pm - A folk-rock Sue parody! This journal hasn't been updated in a while. And generally I don't post parodies here that people have plugged on deleterius because I think it's redundant. But this is just too good not to put here, even if everybody has heard it before.
Title: "The Life" Author: skittlesama Fandom: Harry Potter Rating: ***** (Classic)
Concept: The life of a Mary Sue ... told in song. Canon Elements: "Cristancia" Potter Original Elements: Probably more than half of the Hogwarts boys mentioned by name (in one of the funniest parts of the song)
Why It's Good: The lyrics are brilliant, and the song and skittlesama's voice are gorgeous.
Sample (of lyrics):
( Just a few of the funny lyrics )
Notes: The song must be listened to. The lyrics are funny by themselves, but they're so much better in the context of this fabulous song. Current Mood: impressed Current Music: "The Life" ~ skittlesama

01:56 am - Any Sue parodies to recommend? Yeah, this isn't my personal journal. But allow me to express how pissed off I am that I still can't log into my regular journal ( silverhill), even though, according to the status page the only "cluster" still down is "Madcow," which I'm not on! *grumbles* *bitches* *feels extremely pissed off* (While everyone else is celebrating LiveJournal being back.)
So, while I'm waiting for my sanity regular journal to return, has anybody got some Mary Sue parodies to recommend? I keep seeing people plugging their own stuff at deleterius, so then I think it would be kind of pointless to post it here immediately after. But if anyone wants to see their parodies (or someone else's parodies) featured here, let me know!
(I hadn't totally abandoned this journal and was planning to restart it soon. The loss of my regular journal has kind of sped up the process, though.) Current Mood: pissed off

11:03 pm - HouseElf!Sue (just what you've always wanted!) You thought I'd abandoned this journal, didn't you?
It's not abandoned, though. Not quite. Just neglected, while my other journal ( silverhill) gets my attention. I have been extremely busy lately, partly because I've been working on my comic parodies of HP and LotR Sues. (Yeah, I'm plugging my stuff. Deal.)
So, without further ado, here's the next pick:
Title: Lucius Malfoy and the HalfBlood Princess Author: L.N. Smiffee Fandom: Harry Potter Rating: *** (Good)
Concept: "Dobbée, Dobby's twin half-sister, moves to Malfoy Manor. Can she win Lucius's love and become the half-blood elf princess of his dreams or will the secret of their tempestuous past ruin their chance for happiness?" Canon Elements: Lucius, Malfoy Manor Original Elements: Dobbée the House Elf, who has pink hair (which is really cool!)
Why It's Good: "Twin half-sister" amuses me. And with all the Tolkien elves running around Hogwarts, everybody likes to see what an Elf-Sue would really be.
Sample:
( The House Elf's Sue description, and Lucius and his monocle )
Notes: One shot. I was kind of disappointed with the ending, but the story still amused me, so it earns a place here. Current Mood: lonely

05:46 pm - Fic suggestions needed! I haven't abandoned this journal -- though it's been way too long since I've posted in it. There are a lot of Mary Sue parodies out there ... but a lot of them are not very good. And I don't want to post mediocre or bad parodies just for the sake of posting.
So... I need suggestions of good fanfics that parody LotR and/or Harry Potter Mary Sues. I have OFUM on my list, but it's really long and I haven't had the time to do a proper report on it yet.
In the meantime, read Harry Potter and the Boggart of Love (now updated with Chapter 4) and The Snoggarts (now updated with Chapter 12). Current Mood: busy

07:38 pm - Hobbits? What hobbits? This journal has been on hiatus for a while because I've been so busy. Enjoy this latest entry:
I choose to believe this is a troll writing a parody (because it's a really horrible fic otherwise)...
Title: A Woman in the Fellowship Author: QueenAthenaofMirkwood Fandom: Lord of the Rings Rating: *** (Good)
Concept: A girl joins the Fellowship -- to make it a group of six. Canon Elements: Legolas, Aragorn, Gimli and a couple others Original Elements: Fiona, the kingdom of "Lettis"
Why It's Good: It's delightfully bad. It takes the Sue trick of downplaying the hobbits' roles one step further -- by cutting Merry, Pippin and Sam altogether. (Boromir is also absent, and Frodo randomly leaves for Mordor partway through.)
Sample:
( Forming the Fellowship )
( Sexist!Legolas )
( Meeting Eomer )
Notes: I found this one via a deleterius post of another story by this author. Current Mood: amused

07:42 pm - Nazgul #5 Random plug before the parody: Everybody should go check out babb_chronicles. It's hilarious stuff.
Oh, and I finally updated the user info for this journal.
Now here's a lovely little parody for you...
Title: The Groupie of Dol Guldur Author: Wild Iris Fandom: Lord of the Rings Rating: **** (Excellent)
Concept: A beautiful elf-maiden falls in love with one of the Nazgul. Canon Elements: Sauron, the Ringwraiths Original Elements: Úlairiel
Why It's Good: The Ringwraith OOC-ness is hilarious. This author obviously has a good knowledge of canon (which always makes for better stories).
Sample:
( Úlairiel in Mirkwood )
( Sauron and the Nine )
( Úlairiel and the Ringwraiths )
Notes: The whole thing isn't that long, so go read it. Current Mood: busy

February 17th, 2004
11:50 pm - Longest Sue name yet I had a Harry Potter story picked out, but I've been having trouble with The Pit. Here's this one instead:
Title: Ámalkaëlitueiel A MarySue Parody Author: Carcilwen Greenleaf Fandom: Lord of the Rings Rating: *** (Good)
Concept: Making fun of movie-based Legomances with bad spelling. Canon Elements: Original Elements: Ámalkaëlitueiel, princess of Treeland
Why It's Good: "princess of Treeland" and that name (how would you pronounce it?). And the bad spellings are very inventive.
Sample:
( In Riverdale )
( At the Council )
( Hilariously creative spelling )
( The Ralbog )
Notes: This seems to be the most common style for Mary Sue parodies. So maybe it's a bit overdone, but I don't get tired of it. It always makes me giggle. Current Mood: drained

11:24 pm - I <3 LotR!!!!11!!!! Here's one that I found via a link from lotrsues:
Title: TEH STORY OF AWREN ADN ARGARON!!!!!!!1!!11 Author: Tori!!!!!!!!11 Fandom: Lord of the Rings Rating: **** (Excellent)
Concept: The love story of Aragorn and Arwen told in netspeak. Canon Elements: Aragorn and Arwen Original Elements: None really. Then again, I've never seen "teh pimp sword Andril" before.
Why It's Good: Very silly drawings help tell the story.
Sample:
( AragRon in Riverdell!!1! )
Notes: Click the link to see the story and illustrations. Current Mood: bored

February 11th, 2004
07:17 pm - MWPP-era Sue Title: The Fic That Must Not Be Named Author: Moon Fandom: Harry Potter Rating: **** (Excellent)
Concept: A transfer student captures the interest of Sirius and Remus. Much purple prose and uber-speshul powerz. Canon Elements: Sirius, Remus, James, Peter, Lily, Fawkes Original Elements: Anna Domina, who is a Predictor (and has many secrets about her origin)
Why It's Good: The story itself is good, but there are several one-liners that are just brilliant.
Sample:
( On the Hogwarts Express )
( The Predictor's trance )
( Fawkes )
Notes: There's also a hilarious Sorting Hat song and several other laugh-out-loud moments.
BTW- For anybody who cares, Chapter 9 of my Sue parody is up. Current Mood: happy

February 7th, 2004
01:54 am - Canon Hobbit Sues Hmm... I notice that nobody has commented on my recommendation of "The Best. Fanfic. Ever." I hope that's because everyone's too awed for words and not that everybody just ignored it.
Title: Diamond and Starrie to the Rescue Author: Pippin-the-Squirrel Fandom: Lord of the Rings Rating: *** (Good)
Concept: Diamond and Starrie rescue their boyfriends from "Saryman." Canon Elements: Diamond of Longcleeve, Estella Bolger, Treebeard, Merry, Pippin Original Elements: Legolas' twin Bobolas, "Starrie" as a nickname for Estella
Why It's Good: Very silly and excessive use of exclamation points. A hasty Treebeard.
Sample:
( Meet Diamond and Starrie )
( Enlisting Treebeard's help )
Notes: You might have seen this before if you read lotrsues. A link was posted there a little while ago. Current Mood: amused Current Music: "Minas Tirith" ~ Return of the King

01:35 pm - The Best Fanfic Ever (Really!) This is the story that got me into Mary Sue parodies to begin with. Read it. Love it. It's truly awesome.
Title: The BEST. FANFIC. EVER. The Tale of Namariarwen, Renyarwen, Opaline, Jéowyn & Delphaen. Authors: Xyla ( xyla82), J-girl ( jussacgirl), Renyara ( renyara), Mylla ( mylla) and Delphine. Fandom: Lord of the Rings (and some Harry Potter and other crossovers) Rating: ***** (Classic)
Concept: Five gorgeous, brave, powerful ladies accompany the Fellowship. There's lots of romance, mystery, adventure and silliness. Canon Elements: The Fellowship and pretty much everybody else in the main story of LotR. Also references to other characters such as Celebrian and Feanor. Original Elements: Namariarwen, Renyarwen, Opaline, Jéowyn and Delphaen, extra Silmarils and rings of power, and lots of other touches.
Why It's Good: It's more movie-verse than book-verse, but it pokes fun at the changes in the movies. The story is interesting as well as being hilarious. A bonus Dwarf-Sue named Gauntlet. Crossovers. Author's notes. Uber speshul powerz. And a reference to the Spartoon Forest.
Sample: There's so much good stuff that sampling is very hard. ( Namariarwen joins the Fellowship )
( On Balrog wings )
( More on Balrog wings )
( A bit with Glorfindel )
( Eomer tells a story )
Notes: The authors just started an LJ community: bestfanficever. They've just started posting old episodes there, so it isn't up to date yet. If you want to read the whole thing, go to the link at the top. Or just wait for new posts in the LJ community. Current Mood: impressed

10:38 pm - On writing parodies... In my searches for Mary Sue parodies and badfic parodies, I have found a lot of really bad stories. Parodies of badfics can be just as bad (or worse) than the stories they purport to mock.
So I'm going to offer an analysis of what makes a good parody. Look at the best parodies you've read; they all have several things in common.
They are creative. A lot of bad Mary Sue parodies use the same old jokes. The key is to use new ideas -- or at least use old ideas in new ways. The story should be fresh and original and not seem like a hundred other parodies out there.
They have a strong, clear concept. It doesn't matter what the concept is, but it should be carried throughout the story. (I've read a lot of Mary Sue parodies where the author couldn't decide on a style. So they turn out part MST, part Sue-killing adventure, part mockery through exageration.) Much of the time, concepts that are clear are also creative and clever by default because the author has a good idea of the parody's purpose.
They show an understanding of canon. The best parodies are written and read by people who know a fandom well. References to The Silmarillion are great fun in LotR Sue parodies. The more authors know about the fandom, the more they can use canon to mock bad fanfic.
They show an understanding of fanfics. It's pretty hard to write a good badfic parody if you've only read a couple Mary Sue stories. Hanging around places such as deleterius gives a good idea of trends and cliches, which make great fodder for parodies.
They tell a good story. It's not enough to make fun of Mary Sues and badfics. There should be a story to carry it. (This is different than concept, though the two are often linked.)
They retain their sense of humor. It's easy enough to be funny when describing Mary Sues, but how is the rest of the parody? Is it still funny? A good parody shows intelligence, humor and wit throughout, not just when the Mary Sue is the focus.
----------
And now, I offer a preview of the parody I'm going to post later. Here are a few of its reviews:
"What has already been written, and no doubt what is yet to come, in my opinion, is THE definative Lord of the Rings, as J.R.R. would have fleshed it out had he not been constrained by his uptight, emotionally restrained, masculine upbringing."
"Inventive, knowledgeable, and well written, it is a rare treat!"
"Nearly had me spitting the leftover candy I had in my mouth..."
"Wonderful, I can see that this was how LotR was meant to be."
"Crossovers galore! Hoorah!" Current Mood: contemplative

01:07 am - Ploot! Oh, I've been bad about updating. Been kind of busy. Anyway...
Title: Araminta MalfoyPotter: Eye of the Storm Author: Araminta Malfoy-Potter Fandom: Harry Potter Rating: **** (Excellent)
Concept: Araminta's back! (Do I need to say anything more?) Canon Elements: Harry, Draco (Coco), Hermione (Neenee), James and Lily (who are alive) Original Elements: Araminta, Bollocksy, Fawkes-Iolanthe
Why It's Good: Coco and Neenee! Ploot! And the writing style that made the first one so funny.
Sample:
( A tea-infused author's note )
( ~*~Lexie~*~ )
Notes: Since this is the sequel to the original Araminta Malfoy-Potter story (which I recommended recently), I wasn't going to put it up here so soon. But the the word "ploot" appeared in Chapter 16, so I just had to do it. ( pottersues readers will know the story behind "ploot.") Current Mood: busy

12:43 am - Highly bizarre parody here Title: Harry Potter and the Clichéd Cliché of... Clichés Author: Doctor Strangelove Fandom: Harry Potter Rating: *** (Good)
Concept: Throw a bunch of cliches together and mix them around. Canon Elements: Sirius, James, Remus, Harry and others Original Elements: the author (who's kind of like another character)
Why It's Good: It makes fun of slash, Mary Sues, non-use of the word "said."
Sample:
( Doing fancy things when speaking )
( A really scary sex scene )
Notes: I was going to give this two stars, but I decided to be generous and give it three. I really can't decided how good this is. Some moments are really funny. But the story is all over the place and some moments are rather dumb.
BTW -- My new icon is a reference to the new Araminta Malfoy Potter fic. Current Mood: rushed

January 27th, 2004
10:01 pm - A bonus parody I already reported a parody today. But then I came across this. And it made me laugh so hard that I decided not to wait to post it.
Title: Marinalite Author: LAGALAS Fandom: Lord of the Rings Rating: **** (Excellent)
Concept: Girl falls into Middle-earth. Girl falls in love with Legolas. Girl joins the Fellowship. Canon Elements: Legolas, Arwen, Mordor, Rivendell and other characters and places Original Elements: Marinalite and her evil cat
Why It's Good: The overly simplistic writing style is hilarious. Also, the Sue's Requisite Angsty Past involves an evil cat who scratches her. It's incredibly silly stuff.
Sample:
( A love scene )
( Joining the Fellowship )
( Marinalite and Arwen )
Notes: It's brand new and isn't finished yet. So the latest chapter ends with a cliffhanger. Current Mood: giggly
|
04:01 pm - Snarkiness at its best A little pre-parody plug: Go to purple_prose to report and read elaborate descriptions, awkward metaphors, excessive adjectives and other purple prose.
I've reached 20 people reading this journal. That's quite exciting for me. To celebrate, here's a classic:
Title: Canon Rape Author: necroangel ( tviokh) Fandom: Harry Potter (there's also a dash of Lord of the Rings) Rating: ***** (Classic)
Concept: Tviokh goes Sue-hunting in Hogwarts. Canon Elements: Snape, Dumbledore, etc. Original Elements: Tviokh, various magic spells, the Sues
Why It's Good: I think its great when canon characters know there's something wrong in their world. Many Sues die, which automatically makes it good. Also, I adore the characterization of Snape in this parody.
Sample:
( The Death Curse )
( OMG WTF LOL!!1! )
Notes: I can't do justice to Snape in the samples. So I didn't put him in. Read the whole story for a delightfully in-character Snape. Current Mood: busy

07:23 pm - Please excuse the mess.... I'm in the midst of setting up a community, and somehow, I accidentally managed to replace the info for this journal with the info for the community. And I also accidentally deleted my icons. Grrr! Current Mood: frustrated
|
01:28 pm - Gratuitously green Title: All In A Day's Work Author: NeedleOfDeath Fandom: Lord of the Rings Rating: *** (Good)
Concept: PPC agents go to investigate a Mary Sue. Canon Elements: Legolas, Aragorn Original Elements: Thalia and Shada (the agents)
Why It's Good: Includes the line, "This is badfic, anything can happen."
Sample:
( Parentheses. And Legolas is stabbed. )
( Enelya Elensar )
Notes: The PPC does excellent work. Current Mood: tired

January 25th, 2004
03:20 am - Bad fanfic and disappearing Ron I didn't post a recommendation yesterday because I didn't have time. And, well, I didn't think anyone would be broken-hearted if I missed one day. But now I'm back with a quite enjoyable pick.
Title: The Curse of the Bad Fanfiction Author: Bleak Reality Fandom: Harry Potter Rating: **** (Excellent)
Concept: The curse of bad fanfiction takes hold and a Mary Sue appears, Ron disappears and everybody else is out of character. Canon Elements: Harry, Ron, Hermione, Draco Original Elements: Mary-Sue O'So-cool, Blake Reality and the evil author
Why It's Good: It's a good commentary on how some characters are totally ignored in bad fanfics. Also includes references to slash, bad author's notes and excessive segment dividers (the stuff like: ~*~*~*~*~*~*).
Sample:
( Indecisiveness = weird appearance )
( A special crossover cameo )
Notes: I am always amused by making fun of author's notes, and this parody has some good fake author's notes. Read the whole story to see them. Current Mood: busy
